ANIMALS,
EQUESTRIAN, BIRDS, DOGS, HORSES ETC., Update..18th
February 2005 - The
controversial ban regarding hunting with dogs has now come into force at
midnight on the 17th February. Between the
40s and 70s scarves depicting hunting scenes were the norm but would more than
likely raise a few eyebrows these days - in view of the ban now in
force these
scarves will now become much rarer as time goes by and I suggest that you buy
any that come your way. Many
of the older silk scarves were not signed as per today, the makers name would
appear on the label/tag but no reference to the artist involved, because of this
it is difficult to put a name to some of these lovely old scarves many of which
have stunning graphics.
ROY
THIRKELL - 'ON THE WING' - A super signed fine rayon vintage scarf
with the RT signature, as Thirkell scarves are no longer produced this days this
adds to their rarity, very few turn up these days, don't miss out if you
are lucky enough to come across one. The Thirkell scompany ceased to exist after
1988.
SPANISH
RIDING SCHOOL VIENNA - AUSTRIA -Vintage silk twill scarf commemorating this very
famous riding school and its beautiful white horses which attracts thousands of
visitors every year. This design has also been produced in synthetic fabrics.
POODLE
SCARF - silk - rolled edge - c1950s, typical of its era, Poodle dogs were very
fashionable in the 50s and 60s, this scarf sums up the era. Scarves featuring
Corgis are much harder to find. Dog scarves in
general were very popular at this time as were scarves featuring all sorts of
animals and birds. Later designs featuring dogs tended to be made
from satin finish fabrics
KREIER-
SWITZERLAND - A country look hand rolled silk twill scarf from this
famous Swiss maker, always collectable as so few of them turn up these days.
GUN
DOGS - SETTERS
- yet another reminder of country life, the expressions on the
faces of these two dogs is super. This 50s vintage scarf is
made from heavy silk twill with a hand rolled edge, there is no signature to
this scarf which is a shame as the quality is super and similar to that of some
of the famous French scarf manufacturers. Research reveals that this
particular scarf was made in France.
HUNTING
SCENE - Vintage rayon unsigned scarf which shows yet another hunting scene with
dogs in tow - a nice piece of scarf history. these scarves used to turn up
regularly a few years ago but I very rarely come across any these days while out
'scarfing'.
CORGIS
- Much loved by the British Royals, this lovely vintage says it all, rayon
fabric, unsigned - anyone for walkies?
BELLOTTI
- This heavy silk twill scarf has a rolled edge and is of super quality.
The graphics show a classic equestrian design with nice colourways.
RED
POODLES - a delightful and very cute 60s silk twill scarf with hand rolled
edge, no signature, always sought after by collectors, Poodles are still
very popular especially in France where many can be seen dressed in the
latest doggy 'chic' ensembles.
TAMMIS
KEEFE - U.S.A. - 1920-1960 -This cute silk CAT scarf was designed by the
artist Tammis Keefe who was famous for her colourful whimsical scarves,
her scarves now have a cult following and are highly collectable. Tammis
visited places such as India and Italy which was to influence
some of her designs.
CHESSIE
- THE SLEEPING KITTEN - This cute kitten design features on scarves and other
items of memorabilia and is the logo for CHESAPEAKE & OHIO RAILWAY COMPANY,
this pure silk rolled edge scarf was made for Best & Co., Fifth Ave., New
York.... Chessie items are very collectable.
COUNTRY
SCENE-BIRDS - This lovely silk rolled edge scarf is unsigned and is a good
example of some of the beautiful scarves that you will come across without a
signature, more than likely Italian.
