image19.jpg (94753 bytes)1964 -GAY TIMES AT CHURCHILLS'  CLUB - BOND STREET - LONDON. This nostalgic and  rare quality silk twill  scarf was  designed by the Scots cartoonist Arthur Ferrier and  is truly outstanding.  The graphics say it all  - men and women in evening dress, pure glamour and sophistication, so very different to the ubiquitous  trainers and casual wear that is everywhere  these days. The  high kicking showgirls, top hats and champagne give an insight into an era long gone when only  the rich  could afford to indulge in such luxuries. This wonderful scarf was made at the LIBERTY MERTON PRINT WORKS in 1964 -Merton is situated on the banks of the River Wandle in Surrey.  Merton of course is famous for its connection with WILLIAM MORRIS renowned for his stained glass. Printing and weaving was also carried out  at Merton,  a Tapestry works also existed there. Merton was purchased by Liberty in 1904, production ceased in 1972, the premises however were then used by other companies until its closure in 1982.

This very rare silk twill scarf commemorates the 1st performance World Premier  of Romeo and Juliet at the ROYAL OPERA HOUSE by the ROYAL BALLET  and is dated Tuesday 9th February 1965, as ballet scarves go this one is the creme de la creme and highly collectable due to its appeal with ballet enthusiasts thus commanding a very high price. The scarf is not only signed Hardy Amies but also by the artists themselves.
